Circular No. 71/20: Dealing with Workplace Harassment in Law Firms (27 Nov 2020)

Please be informed that the Young Lawyers and Chambering Pupils and Continuing Professional Development Sub Committees is jointly organising a webinar entitled “Dealing with Workplace Harassment in Law Firms”.

Pursuant to the successful launch of Johore Bar’s Sexual Harassment Awareness Campaign on 19th November 2020, we now present our 2nd event of the Campaign. This webinar will cover the following topics:-

  • Understanding & Identifying Harassment
  • Dealing with Harassment – The Survivor Guide
  • From Bystander to Upstander – Supporting Survivors at the Workplace
  • They Don’t Necessarily Know Better – Expectations on Senior Lawyers and Bosses

About the Speaker

Emellia was admitted as an advocate & solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 2015 and then worked as a compliance executive for a multinational GLC in Malaysia. During her legal practice, Emellia majored in corporate litigation and corporate advisory.  As a compliance executive, she was entrusted with Corporate Governance, specifically in relation to designing and socialising policies across operations. Emellia was also entrusted to manage the Grievance and Whistleblowing reports.

Emellia is also known for her work as a gender rights advocate on sexual harassment where she combined her legal, compliance and corporate governance training into helping organisations create a safe and productive environment. Her expertise includes developing anti-sexual harassment policies and code of conduct, establishing grievance and whistleblowing mechanisms, engaging with stakeholders to re-establish trust and working relationships, as well as handling complaints while overseeing investigations. She does this in her capacity as the Managing Partner of Speak Up Malaysia.

Emellia has been invited as a speaker at various talks, including the recent Employment Conference 2019. She has conducted various training and appointed as consultants by private and public entities, as well as regulatory bodies. She was engaged to be part of the special committee to draft the Sexual Harassment Bill in Malaysia by the Ministry of Women, Family & Community Development while working closely with the Attorney General Chambers.

To register, please submit the following details by email to the Secretariat (secretariat@johorebar.org.my) on or before 26th November 2020 (Thursday).

  1. Name of participant(s) and the corresponding Membership Number/Petition Number;
  2. Name of legal firm; and
  3. Email address of each participant.

CPD points will be given upon completion of the whole session to participants who have attended until the end of the event and filled up the Attendance Form successfully.
