On 25 October 2013, the Malaysian government announced that the Goods and Services Tax (“GST”) will be implemented on 1 April 2015. The GST is set to replace the current sales and services tax. In light of the latest development, the Johore Bar Committee, in collaboration with the Continuing Professional Development (“CPD”) Department, is organising a seminar to educate Members of the Bar regarding the GST.
The seminar will cover the following areas:
(a) key GST principles;
(b) scope and charges to tax;
(c) case studies (in relation to GST);
(d) comparative legislation;
(e) criminal provisions; and
(f) implications on law firms.

About the Speakers
Anand Raj is a Partner from Messrs Shearn Delamore & Co. He was admitted to the Malaysian Bar as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in October 1996. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Fiscal Association (Malaysia Branch), the Chairperson of the Bar Council Tax Subcommittee, a member of the Bar Council Competition Law Subcommittee and the former Chairperson of the Tax Committee of the American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce.
Benedict Francis is the Executive Director, Tax, PricewaterhouseCoopers Malaysia. Benedict heads up the PwC Johor Bahru tax practice. He has 18 years of experience both in Malaysia and Singapore, in cross border tax planning, group restructuring, business model optimisation, mergers & acquisition tax consulting, structuring of funds, tax incentive application and negotiation, dealing with tax queries, transfer pricing, tax audit and investigations.
Benedict speaks frequently on Malaysian taxation and the impact of GST at various seminars and is a panel speaker at seminars organised by the Malaysian Inland Revenue Board. Benedict is a fellow member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), and the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (“MIA”), and a committee member of the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (“MICCI”).
