Circular No. 56/2024: Criminal Law Seminar & Lunch in Appreciation of YBGK Volunteers (7 Nov 2024)

The Legal Aid and Professional Development & Education Sub Committees are jointly organizing this seminar and a lunch in appreciation of the YBGK Volunteers serving the Johor Legal Aid Centre.

Our speakers will share their experiences and insights on navigating criminal defence, emphasizing the importance of preparation, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and case management. Notable case studies will be shared with attendees.

About the Speakers

BHARATHI A/P A KTISHNAN was admitted as an Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 1997 with an LLB (Hons.) Degree from University of London. She has extensive experience dealing in criminal cases and family law practices and often appears at High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court. Presently, she manages her own private practice in the name and style of M/s K. Bharathi & Co. Ms Bharathi serves as secretary of the Johore Bar Legal Aid & YBGK Sub-Committees. She periodically engages with Lexis Nexis to provide awareness in Bahasa Malaysia and Tamil language on remand procedures, arrest, bail and conversion. She also appears as guest speakers at law colleges in Johor Bahru.

SUBASH RAMASAMY was called to the Malaysian Bar in 2001 and has been in practice for over 20 years and have appeared at all levels of the Courts in Malaysia. Subash has a Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB) from University of London and Certificate in Legal Practice. He is an active litigator at trial and appellate level and has wide experience in dealing with the criminal law trials, quasi criminal trials and Judicial review cases. He has held many watching briefs for the family of the underage rape victims, for people with disabilities and for family of the deceased person in the proceedings at the local courts. Subash had represented people with the disabilities, worked pro bono in several civil-liberties related trials; given motivational lectures to many secondary school students especially on the sensitive issues relating teenagers be it on legal or social aspects; actively took part in legal aid clinics to educate and advise public on the legal matters; has authored several legal articles in local legal publications like Malayan Law Journal, Current Law Journal and Quarterly Law Review. He actively took part in legal aid clinics to educate and advise public on legal matters; a part time tutor for students sitting for the CLP examination for the last few years and Criminal Procedure was one of the subjects that being taught by him. Recently he has appeared in TV3 Fail Mahkamah programmes.

LYDIANA MANSOR is a dedicated lawyer and lifelong learner with a rich background in law and public service. She holds a Bachelor of Legal Studies (Hons), an LL.B (Hons), and a Diploma in Syariah Practice (DLSA) from UiTM, alongside a Master of Science in Construction Contract Management from UTM. Driven by her passion for justice and governance, she is currently pursuing a Ph.D. focused on Political, Parliamentary, and Constitutional Studies. Beginning her legal career in 2004, Lydiana’s journey has included roles as a Legal Secretary at Abdul Raman Saad & Associates, Legal Executive at J.S. Pillay & Mohd Haziq, and Legal Officer with the Federal Government. She then became a Legal Associate at Zaid Ibrahim & Co., gaining diverse experience across legal fields. In 2016, she fulfilled a longstanding goal by founding her own firm, Lydiana Law Chambers, where she advocates for her clients with dedication and care. Lydiana is deeply committed to giving back to her community. She frequently speaks at schools and universities, sharing insights and inspiring future generations. A Subcommittee member for the Johor Bar Committee, she also volunteers with the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) in Johor. Passionate about accessible justice, she actively handles pro bono matters, serves as assigned counsel by the High Court, and has supported the Yayasan Bantuan Guaman Kebangsaan (YBGK) since 2013. Guided by her life motto, “Live life to the fullest,” Lydiana brings energy, compassion, and purpose to her work and her community.

MOHD SALLEH BIN TOGIMIN is a Partner at Messrs Aba & Associates. He holds an LL.B (Hons.) degree from the UIAM and was admitted to the Malaysian Bar in 2014.
