Speakers
Gaythri Raman is the Managing Director of LexisNexis Southeast Asia and she is responsible for leading the Southeast Asia business in the development and execution of strategies to deliver innovative information analytics solutions to customers in helping them increase productivity and improve decision-making outcomes. She is also driving growth in the ASEAN region, working with partners across the multiple jurisdictions to enable access to laws and analytical tools. She speaks frequently on the topics of rule of law, legal technologies, artificial intelligence, digital transformations, and technological innovation at various events and platforms across the region. Gaythri is legally trained and is a big believer in combining technology and the law to empower individuals for the betterment of society. She has also led various programs and initiatives on capacity building, access to laws and justice, legal reform and education in Sri Lanka, Maldives, South Africa, Myanmar, to name a few. Gaythri believes that serving lawyers by utilising technology is the core of her company’s business. In her role, she balances two priorities — #1, leveraging existing and the latest technology around the world to benefit customers in ASEAN; and #2, innovating new technologies from her region and building own solutions from these. In order for this to happen, she is always keeping a close watch on the evolution of the practice of law in tandem with the developments in technology in the region and around the world, and use that knowledge to improvise her product development roadmap for her customers.
Lim Wei Jiet is an experienced trial & appellate lawyer with more than 25 reported judgments, acting as counsel at all levels of the Malaysian Courts & in international arbitration proceedings. Wei Jiet has a wide court craft which spans across commercial contracts, corporate disputes, fraud, trusts, intellectual property, land acquisition and employment law. He is also versed in public law disputes, having lead many high-impact suits against government bodies to vindicate the fundamental rights & economic interests of clients. Recently, Wei Jiet was named “Young Lawyer of the Year” at Thomson Reuters’ Asian Legal Business Malaysian Law Awards 2022, which acknowledges a practitioner aged 40 & below for his/her “remarkable achievements in the legal profession and the larger community as well”.”
Mohamad Ezri bin Abdul Wahab is the Vice-President of the Malaysian Bar for the term 2022/2023 and 2023/2024. He was elected to the Bar Council from 2016 to 2021 and from 2022 to 2024.He was called to the Bar in 1994 and started his own firm in 1996. He is an accredited mediator and a Syariah Law practitioner in Penang.In 2018, he was appointed as the President of the Strata Management Tribunal under the Ministry of Housing and Local Government Development, a position which he currently holds until today. He completed the Train-the-Trainer (“TTT”) Programme on Anti Money Laundering, which was a collaborative effort between Bank Negara Malaysia and the Asian Banking School. He is currently the Chairperson of the Bar Council AMLA Committee and Bar Council Ad Hoc Committee on Touting.
Matthew Thomas Philip graduated with a degree in Economics and Law from University of Adelaide in 1991. He has been in litigation practice since 1992. He has been running his own litigation practice since 1997. In 2004, he set up Thomas Philip which is focused on commercial and civil litigation. He has a keen interest in law firm practice and management and is keen to share his own unique insights based on his experiences of both failures and successes to young lawyers.
Eddie Law is the founder of eLawyer Recruitment. Before starting eLawyer, he started his career as private practitioner and as an in-house lawyer with a technology company. In 2015, he was selected by the Asian Law Portal as one of the 30 people to watch for in the business of law in Asia. In 2016, he was awarded Runner Up of the Vice Chancellor’s Outstanding Alumni Award: Entrepreneur of the Year Award from his alma mater, Anglia Ruskin University. This made him the first and the only Asian to receive such award. In 2021, he was appointed by the reputable law school ATC as Industrial Advisor. Today eLawyer has assisted thousands of lawyers find their ideal jobs. In addition to providing legal recruitment service, He is also a certified professional coach. He is passionate in helping law firms in business coaching and leadership. He is also a registered member of the Malaysia Association of Certified Coach (MACC). He is regularly invited by Malaysian Bar, various state Bars, law schools, churches to speak about legal career, coaching skill and leadership related topics.
Foong Cheng Leong is a lawyer focusing in the areas of Intellectual Property, Information Technology, Franchise, Privacy and Data Protection laws. He has written books on Compendium of Malaysian Intellectual Property Cases – Trade Marks, Compendium of Malaysian Intellectual Property Cases – Copyright, and Foong’s Malaysia Cyber, Electronic Evidence and Information Technology Law. He is also a contributor of the Malaysian Chapter of Data Protection Laws of the World, published by Sweet and Maxwell. He is regularly featured in the media, notably over topics regarding intellectual property, cyberlaw, data privacy and the like. He is also a regular columnist for Digital News Asia and writes at www.foongchengleong.com.
Fadhil Ihsan (Dale) is a litigator and technology advocate who is passionate about using technology to improve the legal profession. He has spent the last few years giving talks and workshops on how lawyers can use technology to be more efficient, effective, and client-focused. Dale believes that technology should be accessible and affordable for all. Dale was called to the bar in 2010 and is a partner of Azwad Ihsan & Co, Johor Bahru.
Abhilaash Subramaniam practices all areas of Revenue law, with a focus on tax disputes and judicial review and ESG Law. He has appeared for taxpayers at all levels of the Malaysian Courts and has acted in a number of leading Malaysian tax cases. He was recognised as a Recommended Lawyer in Tax by The Legal 500 in 2022. Abhilaash is also the co-founder of practice management software, LXE Theory, which digitises the way files are managed by lawyers and the co-founder of LXE Nextsteps, which assists organisations with client data management and KYC checks. LXE was recognised in Nexea’s Top 20 Start-ups 2021 and was a Top In Tech Awards 2022 Finalist.
