We are pleased to announce that the Professional Development & Education together with Corporate & Conveyancing Sub-Committees is organizing a workshop on “How to Charge Fees under the Solicitors’ Remuneration Order 2023.”
Since there are more conveyancing lawyers compared to litigators and commercial lawyers, conveyancing practice has produced the highest number of complaints received by the Bar Council from the general public, the highest number of PII claims and the highest number of disciplinary actions.
Non-compliance of the SRO is a misconduct and non-compliance may void PII cover.
The speaker will highlight and discuss the many issues and problems faced by conveyancing lawyers on how to charge fees under the SRO:
- Meaning of non-contentious business.
- Basic principles on how to charge fees.
- Composition of remuneration under the SRO.
- What are disbursements reasonably and properly paid and incurred?
- Can a solicitor charge more than the prescribed fees under the SRO?
- How to apply the discount of up to 25% of fees prescribed under the SRO.
- Transactions under the First Schedule to the Sixth Schedule.
- When are transactions completed?
- Waiver of fees.
- Consequences of non-compliance
Participants will participate in the workshop by answering some questions and bring along a copy of the SRO.
