Circular No. 3/2025: E-Invoicing For Law Firms (13 Mar 2025)

The Johore Bar Committee is organizing a seminar on e-Invoicing for members in light of its  mandatory implementation, which will take full effect on 1st July 2025. Law firms with an annual turnover below RM500,000 will be granted a concession of an additional six months, until 1st January 2026.

With this significant transition requiring law firms to electronically document nearly all commercial activities and financial records, firms must begin preparing for compliance.

This seminar will cover:

  • IT requirements for law firms
  • Managing tax records
  • Addressing legal privilege and clients’ accounts
  • Reviewing Anti-Money Laundering (AML) practices
  • Engagement with software providers offering e-Invoicing solutions for law firms

Speakers

Benedict Francis is PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Malaysia’s Southern Region Leader and Tax Partner. He has over 25 years of experience in both Malaysia and Singapore in a whole range of tax advisory services such as cross border tax planning, group restructuring, business model optimisation, Mergers & Acquisition, tax structuring for inbound and outbound investments, tax incentive application and negotiation, dealing with tax queries, transfer pricing, tax audit and investigations, regulatory and exchange control requirements as well as other advisory work relating to income tax, stamp duty, real property gains tax, capital gains tax, double taxation treaties and e-invoicing.

Benedict’s client portfolio is diverse as he works with large multinationals, local corporations, the Johor State Government, government linked companies and family-owned businesses across various industries such as manufacturing, energy and resources, telecommunication, media and technology, pharmaceutical and life sciences, education, property development, construction services, plantation, shipping, transportation and logistics and others.

Benedict speaks frequently on Malaysian taxation at various seminars in Malaysia and abroad and as a panel speaker at seminars organised by the Malaysian Inland Revenue Board, Malaysian Employers Federation, Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia and Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants. He has also authored several thought leadership articles.

Benedict is the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MICCI) Southern Region Vice-Chairman and MICCI National General Committee member. He is also a Committee member of the Rotary Club of Johor Bahru. He is a licensed tax agent (Income Tax) under the Ministry of Finance, a fellow member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Malaysia Institute of Accountants (MIA) and Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia (CTIM).

Nicholas Mark Pereira is a partner of Juen, Jeat, Nic & Nair. His primary area of practice is tax. He handles both advisory and contentious tax work. Nicholas represents clients in tax appeals before the courts and tax tribunals. He also assists clients in dealing with tax audits or investigations. Additionally, he frequently renders legal opinions to both taxpayers and tax consultants on technical tax issues. He also assists clients in dealing with complex tax issues that may arise from commercial transactions and restructuring exercises.

Khong Siong Sie is a partner in his firm’s tax and revenue practice.  He has experience in resolving disputes with tax authorities.  Siong Sie has advised and represented local and international clients of various industries on all aspects of tax and revenue law.  His expertise has led to recognition in Chambers Asia-Pacific 2025, Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2025 and Who’s Who Legal Southeast Asia 2024 for Tax in Malaysia.  He is also a Fellow Chartered Certified Accountant (“FCCA”) and an Associate Member of the Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia (“CTIM”).  Before joining the legal practice, he was a treasury manager cum in-house counsel for Tesco Malaysia.  He also has four years of experience with PricewaterhouseCoopers (Kuala Lumpur) and two years of tax practice with a local tax firm.

Joshua Tan graduated from Bradley University in BSc Electrical & Computer Engineering. His involvement in the sales and marketing activities in the ICT industry began with Hewlett Packard (“HP”) in 1990, and he spent 8 years in the company in various positions, from engineering, sales management and country marketing management. His last assignment at HP was a regional assignment in Singapore, where he was the Marketing Manager for the Personal Systems Group division, managing the PC portfolio budget in excess of USD600m.

After his stint in Singapore, he joined a local payment systems company in Malaysia, GHL Systems Sdn Bhd, from 1998 to 2000 as Sales and Marketing Director of the Systems Integration division. He later joined Digiland Distribution Malaysia Sdn Bhd as the Managing Director. Upon joining the board of Business Network Solutions Sdn Bhd and Inceptio Technologies Sdn Bhd, he spearheaded the management, product, market development and support of CoreMatter, resulting in hundreds of legal firms with thousands of users using CoreMatter in 10 countries in Asia today.

Susan Foo is the Operations Director and Executive Director of Business Network Solutions Sdn Bhd and Inceptio Technologies Sdn Bhd. Her extensive knowledge, back ground and experience in corporate accounting enable her to manage the daily operations and the smooth running of the company’s back end activities and processes.

She was one of the pioneer staff of Business Networks Solutions Sdn Bhd and Inceptio Technologies Sdn Bhd having started in 1997 as the office manager, responsible for all back-office aspects of human resources, accounts, purchasing and office management. Prior to this, she has worked in various capacities in corporate organisations such Hume Industries (Malaysia) Bhd, Berjaya Group of Companies and GHL Systems Bhd.
