The Young Lawyers and Chambering Pupils Sub Committee is organizing a series of talks for the benefit of young lawyers and pupils. The primary objective of the series is to expose young lawyers and pupils to areas of law and practice that are common and in which they will most likely come across in practice but they may not have had prior exposure or knowledge of during their pupillage. It is hoped that this series will provide the young lawyers and pupils with the basic knowledge and workings of that area so that they will be better prepared and ready if and when they come across such legal work in the early years of practice. In line with the objective, each talk will focus primarily on the basics and general workings of the law/practice in that area for the benefit of the young lawyers and pupils.
The series will start with a webinar on “Introduction to Employment Law”.
THE WEBINAR
This webinar will cover the following topics :-
- Application of the Employment Act 1955, Industrial Relation Act 1967, key amendments from the Industrial Relations (Amendment) Act 2020.
- The trial process in the Jabatan Tenaga Kerja (Labour Court) and in the Industrial Court.
- Judicial Review of Industrial Court Awards in the High Court and appeals from the Labour Court.

About the Speaker
MATHEWS GEORGE is a senior practitioner in Johor Bahru having been admitted to the Malaysian Bar on 8.11.1994. He currently practices under the law firm Mathews George & Co established in 2004. In his 28 years of practice, he has conducted numerous cases in diverse areas of law but his main area of practice is Employment cases in particular at the Industrial Court.
Many of his cases have been reported in the Law Journals (MLJ, CLJ, AMR) including the Industrial Law Reports. (ILR)
He has served the Johore Bar Committee for many years in various position such as Treasurer, Chairman of Human Rights Sub-Committee, Sports Sub-Committee and the Publication Sub-Committee.
