This seminar is primarily focused on the current practice and procedure as well as the judicial approach in unilateral conversion proceedings. This entails the interpretation of statutes, the principles on the criteria to be fulfilled, and the development of the law in this area with recent Federal Court judgments.
This talk aims to provide members of the Johore Bar with comprehensive insights into unilateral conversion, focusing on crucial aspects of the difference between unilateral conversion and renunciation of religion, and the effects of unilateral conversion on minors.
This seminar will cover the basics of unilateral conversion including:-
- What is unilateral conversion;
- How it affects minors;
- Discussion on Indira Gandhi’s case;
- The difference between Indira Gandhi and Lina Joy’s cases;
- Latest update on FC Loh Siew Hong’s case;
- The current law and practices on unilateral conversion.

About the Speaker
BHARATHI A/P A KTISHNAN was admitted as an Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 1997 with an LLB (Hons.) Degree from University of London. She has extensive experience dealing in criminal cases and family law practices and often appears at High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court. Presently, she manages her own private practice in the name and style of M/s K. Bharathi & Co. Ms Bharathi serves as secretary of the Johore Bar Legal Aid & YBGK Sub-Committees. She periodically engages with Lexis Nexis to provide awareness in Bahasa Malaysia and Tamil language on remand procedures, arrest, bail and conversion. She also appears as guest speakers at law colleges in Johor Bahru.
