About the Speaker

Abdul Haris bin Abu Bakar started his career as Legal Officer at Johor Port Authority in Pasir Gudang in 1985 before opting to joint Johor Port Berhad when the port was corporatized in 1993 and later privatized in 1995. During his tenure at the Port, he was substantially involved in handling legal matters, particularly in dealing with claims against the port, drafting contracts involving the port operations including leasing of port land and warehouses to local and international clients and advising the management on legal issues and matters affecting the port. While with the port Mr Abdul Haris had gained knowledge and insight on ports and maritime matters in Malaysia. He had attended courses and seminars local and abroad, amongst others on maritime law at the University of Southampton UK and at the Lloyd of London during his career with the Port.

On 1st of May 1997, he set up his legal firm in Johor Bahru under the name of Messrs. Abdul Haris, Norhayati & Co. In his years of practice, he has had the opportunity to act as the external Legal Consultant to the State Government of Johor Darul Takzim in drafting corporate, privatization and development agreements for the State Government. He has the privileges of serving and representing other state and governmental bodies.

Mr Abdul Haris has also represented prominent organizations such as Lembaga Pelabuhan Johor, Tanjung Langsat Port and Johor Corporation where he was actively involved in negotiations with local and foreign investors for and on behalf of his clients which involved preparing specialized contracts for its customers including Joint Ventures, Operational Agreements, Tanks Storage Agreement, Jetty Usage Agreement and Wayleave Agreement. He was also involved in the drafting and gazettement of several by-laws for the Port of Tanjung Pelepas during the early stage of development of the port. He was appointed as the legal advisor for Tanjung Langsat Port for the issuance of the company’s Sukuk (Islamic Bond) and later was appointed by the Johor Port Authority to draft the Pasir Gudang Port new port tariff.

Mr Abdul Haris has also acted on behalf of his client on matters involving marine and oil pollution, collision coverage, tug and pilotage services, safety procedures of port operations and on matters concerning rights and liabilities of parties involved in warehousing, transport and logistics activities.  He has acted as the Legal Consultant in the drafting of Jetty Operating License for the Pengerang Deepwater Petroleum Terminal.

He was previously engaged by Netherlands Maritime University College to give lectures on Maritime Law, in particular on the subject of Elements of Maritime Law and the Law of Carriage of Goods by Sea at the University. Mr Abdul Haris is currently the External Adviser for Diploma in Maritime Law program of the Netherlands Maritime University College.

CPD points will be given upon completion of the whole session to participants who have attended until the end of the event based on the online report of ‘logged-in’ duration.
