Circular No. 39/2024: Getting Started! Series: Conveyancing in a Competitive Climate (23 Aug 2024)

Looking to gain a solid understanding on Conveyancing practice? We are pleased to announce that the Social, Charity & Member’s Welfare Sub-Committee together with the Professional Development & Education Sub-Committees is organizing a webinar on the Getting Started! Series entitled ‘Conveyancing In A Competitive Climate (this program is part of a module taken from the Bar Council Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) Committee’s flagship).

This Webinar will provide you with the skills to get a grasp on the Conveyancing process, help you be aware of the risks that may crop up in conveyancing, and how you can avoid any complications in the form of claims and complaints. 

Topics to be covered in this talk:

1.    Taking on a conveyancing matter:

–   Meeting the client (local, foreigner, PA, body corporate and etc.)

–   Managing client’s expectations

–   Talk about fees and scope of work

2.    Implementing a workable conveyancing process:

–   Use of risk management conveyancing checklist

–   How it works for staffs/LA/Partner

3.    Dealing with parties and information:

–   Considerations when representing the client (as Purchaser’s or Vendor’s solicitor)

–   Land office, Inland Revenue Board, Dept. of Insolvency Malaysia & etc

4.    Managing Conflicts of Interest:

–   Examples of conflicts

–   Ways to avoid conflict

5.    Frauds and Scams:

–   Identifying the hallmarks of some of the most common and problematic frauds and scams

6.    The admin side of things:

–   Managing time and deadlines

–   Maintaining files and records

–   Keeping up to date with charges

–   Adopting tolls to aid lawyers and law firms

About the Speaker

Dato’ Low Beng Choo holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from University of Malaya (1982) and a Master of Science in Information Technology from Staffordshire University, United Kingdom (2006). She was admitted and enrolled as an Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya on 29 January 1983, and has since gained over 40 years of experience in law practice. She is currently a consultant in a legal firm in Kuala Lumpur. She is also a registered Mediator of the Malaysian Bar Council Mediation Centre and a Notary Public. She served as an elected member of Malaysia Bar Council (1996 to March 2016) and as Chair and member of various committees of the Bar Council and is currently still a member of Conveyancing Practice Committee.
