The Continuing Professional Development Sub-Committee of the Johore Bar is organizing a Talk on Custody Battles in Conversion Cases at Civil and Syariah Courts.

About the Speakers

Ms. Pushpa Ratnam is an advocate and solicitor. She was admitted to the High Court of Malaya in 1994. She received a scholarship from the University of Kingston to complete the final two years of her law degree there, and was also sponsored by the Magistracy of London to complete her Bar final. Pushpa Ratnam served the London Judiciary as a Legal Advisor and Magistrates until 1994. During her five years in service, she gained vast experience in the area of family law in the United Kingdom. This has been enhanced by her continued assistance in various local and international women’s groups and organisations. In the course of legal practice, she has also presented several papers at national forums, and spoken at Kuala Lumpur Bar and Bar Council forums on family law, domestic violence and gender issues.

Tuan Haji Azmi bin Tan Sri Datuk Dr Mohd Rais is a partner and founder of Messrs Zulkifli Yong Azmi & Co. He was admitted to the High Court of Malaya in 1995. His areas of specialization in Syariah Litigation; Syariah Estate Planning – Hibah, Wisoyah, Wasiah; Conveyancing matters – Developer/Sub Sale; Corporate matters: JV Agreements, Sales of Shares, Trust deeds; and Intellectual Property Rights registration – ID’s, Trademarks. He actively involved in Persatuan Ibu Tunggal Negeri Sembilan since 2001 as an Legal Advisor concerning Matrimonial Law Issues and Persatuan Peguam Syarie Malaysia involved in the development of the future Akta Peguam Syarie leading to the promulgation of Syariah Bar Council. He has represented many high profile cases involving artistes and politicians and landmark cases in the Syariah courts (involving Conflict of Jurisdiction cases) and the Federal Courts. He also represented Majlis Agama Islam in cases involving conversion out of Islam, conversion of minor into Islam and conflict of jurisdiction issues.
