Circular No. 28/20: Johore Bar Remand Team – Calling For Volunteers

(You may also send in your registration via WhatsApp message to 07-2763888. The deadline is extend to 27 May 2020)

To all Members of the Johore Bar

The Johore Bar Human Rights Sub-Committee is working towards setting up a Remand Team to assist foreign nationals during the remand process in the Johor Bahru Magistrate’s/Sessions courts.

Reduction of crowd numbers in any given setting has been and continues to be the focal point in the battle against the Covid-19 pandemic. To this end, the number of remand prisoners, locals and foreigners, in lockups/prisons should be reduced as much as possible.

Currently, YBGK services are available to Malaysians. No such service is in place for foreign nationals. The object of setting up a Remand Team is to provide legal representation for foreign nationals to help reduce the number of days they could possibly have to spend in detention, thus avoiding the overcrowding of lockups/prisons during this pandemic.

The Remand Team is expected to operate from 27th May 2020 to 9th June 2020. To help in this initiative, we urge members of the Bar to support this initiative by volunteering for the Remand Team.

Please complete the attached registration form and returning the same to the Johore Bar Secretariat by hand or by fax to 07-2761188 by Friday, 22nd May 2020 before 4:00 p.m.
