Circular No. 6/15: Seminar on Family Law (9 Apr 2015)

The Continuing Professional Development Sub-Committee of the Johore Bar in collaboration with the Bar Council CPD Department is organizing a seminar on Family Law.

This seminar is ideal for Members who have up to five years of experience in handling family law matters. The seminar will include discussions on the basic law and cases as well as the relevant procedures. It will be interactive and Members are expected to participate in the question-and-answer sessions, and the practical drafting exercise. Participants are advised to bring along the following statutes: Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976, Divorce and Matrimonial Proceedings Rules 1980, Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Rules 1982, Married Women and Children (Maintenance) Act 1950, Guardianship of Infants Act 1961, and Courts of Judicature Act 1964.

RM 50.00 for Pupils in Chambers.

About the speaker

Pushpa Ratnam is an advocate and solicitor. She was admitted to the High Court of Malaya in 1994. She received a scholarship from the University of Kingston to complete the final two years of her law degree there, and was also sponsored by the Magistracy of London to complete her Bar finals. Pushpa Ratnam served the London Judiciary as a Legal Advisor to Magistrates until 1994. During her five years in service, she gained significant experience in the area of family law in the United Kingdom. This has been enhanced by her continued assistance to various local and international women’s groups and organisations. In the course of legal practice, Pushpa Ratnam has presented several papers at national forums, and spoken at Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee and Bar Council forums on issues relating family law, domestic violence and gender.
