Improving the Standard of Advocacy and Producing Better Advocates
The Continuing Professional Development Sub-Committee of the Johore Bar in collaboration with the Bar Council Professional Standards and Development Committee will be conducting an Advocacy Training Course (ATC) in Johor Bahru.
ATC is a course jointly organised by the Bar Council Professional Standards & Development Committee, the Chief Registrar’s Office, Lincoln Inn Alumni Association of Malaysia and the Malaysian Inner Temple Alumni Association with the objective of teaching the basics of advocacy based on the Hampel Method which requires participants to perform as advocates in a simulated courtroom environment under the guidance of experienced trainers. The aim of this course is to identify and correct basic mistakes in advocacy, while offering guidance by example.
Training sessions had been successfully conducted in Johor Bahru, the upcoming one being the second one in Johor Bahru, and Muar with a very encouraging response, both in term of numbers of participants and their active participation and enthusiasm during the training.
The feedback received from the participants at the end of the training was that it was invaluable in many respects. Although the course is aimed primarily at lawyers in their first three years of practice by identifying and correcting basic mistakes as well as offering guidance, the value of the instructions and guidance for lawyers beyond that range of practice cannot be gain said. The feedback received from such lawyers is that the course was an eye-opener in that what was perceived and accepted as the “right” way of conducting a trial was in fact erroneous. So, it is never too late in the day to gain knowledge and correct our mistakes.
In order to ensure that participants receive sufficient attention and guidance, they will be divided into groups of six to be trained by a minimum of 2 trainers per group. As it an intensive one, the session in Johor Bahru is open to 36 participants and places are allocated on a first-come first-served basis.
