Circular No. 37/19: Workshop on Procedural Laws and Practical Issues on Family Law (26 July 2019)

Please be informed that the Continuing Professional Development Sub-Committee is organizing a full day Workshop on the Procedural Laws and Practical Issues on Family Law.

The Workshop aims to provide the participants with a thorough understanding of the practice and procedure of Family Law. The Workshop will cover a spectrum of issues, from the best practice in Drafting a Divorce Petition all the way through to Enforcement and even drafting committal papers.

The Workshop structure is as follows:-

9.30am to 10.30am Discussion on amendments to the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce Act)
Amendment Act 2017
11.00am to 12.30pm Drafting a Divorce Petition
12.30pm to 2.30pm Lunch Break/Prayers
2.30pm to 3.30pm Drafting a Divorce Petition (continued)
3.30pm to 4.30pm Enforcement of decree nisi in cases of non-compliance
4.30pm to 6.00pm Drafting committal papers

About the Speaker

Mr. Ravi Nekoo was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 1995. He obtained his Masters in Laws and Masters in Criminal Justice in 2002 at the University Malaya. He was further admitted to the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Supreme Court of South Australia and the High Court of Australia as a Barrister and Solicitor. Having gained sufficient legal knowledge and experience and having run his own practice, he joined Messrs Hakem Arabi & Associates as a partner in 2009. He is a litigation lawyer who has appeared at all levels of the court. He has also authored several books, the latest being Malaysian Civil Procedure and Practice published by Current Law Journal and has been a tutor for students sitting for the CLP examination for many years.

Ms. Pushpa Ratnam is an advocate and solicitor. She was admitted to the High Court of Malaya in 1994. She received a scholarship from the University of Kingston to complete the final two years of her law degree there, and was also sponsored by the Magistracy of London to complete her Bar finals. Pushpa Ratnam served the London Judiciary as a Legal Advisor to Magistrates until 1994. During her five years in service, she gained significant experience in the area of family law in the United Kingdom. This has been enhanced by her continued assistance to various local and international women’s groups and organisations. In the course of legal practice, Pushpa Ratnam has presented several papers at national forums, and spoken at Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee and Bar Council forums on issues relating family law, domestic violence and gender.

CPD points and Certificate of attendance will be given upon completion of the whole session to participants who have attended until the end of the event.
