The Johore Bar Young Lawyers and Chambering Pupils Sub Committee is organising a seminar entitled “Drafting Civil Cause Papers and Written Submissions.”

The topics covered in the talk will include the following:

Pleadings

  • What are Pleadings, and the Essential Elements of Pleadings in a Writ Action
  • Differences with Affidavits in Originating Summons
  • How to Draw Up An Impressive Statement of Claim/Statement of Defence
  • Question-and Answer Session

Written Submissions – Different Approach/Emphasis on Oral Submissions

  • At the End of A Trial
  • In An Appeal
  • How a Counsel can assist the Judge(s) with a properly structured written submission
  • Questions-and Answer Session on Written Submissions and Pleadings

About the speaker

Dato’ Varghese George graduated with an LLB degree from the University of Singapore in 1974, and was in private legal practice for 35 years, principally involved in civil litigation in various types of commercial cases, construction-related suits and arbitration, land matters, and administrative law disputes. He was the Senior Partner at Messrs Zain & Co before being appointed as a Judicial Commissioner in October 2009. He was elevated as Judge of the High Court in August 2011, and as a Judge of the Court of Appeal in September 2013. He retired from the Bench at the end of January 2017.

He is a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Malaysian Institute of Arbitrators. He is presently on the Panel of Mediators, Adjudicators and Arbitrators of the Kuala Lumpur Centre for Arbitration (“KLRCA”).

Registration must be accompanied with payment to guarantee your place and is on a first-come first served basis.

CPD points and Certificate of attendance will be given upon completion of the whole session to participants who have attended until the end of the event.
