Mark your calendar on 9 January 2012 for the Johore Bar Human Rights Sub-committee
has organized a forum where three eminent speakers will speak on the Human Rights,
Civil Liberties & Democracy in Malaysia today.
The event will be moderated by our own Dato’ Yeo Yang Poh, Malaysian Bar Council
President for the years 2005 to 2007. We cordially invite you to this forum, the details of which
are as follows:-

About the speakers:
Dato’ Ambiga Sreenevasan
Advocate & Solicitor
Mediator, Bar Council
Dato’ Ambiga is the second female Malaysian Bar Council President from 2007 to 2009.
Six months after assuming her leadership, she organized the “March for Justice” calling for
judicial reform leading to a Royal Commission and a finding of need for corrective action.
As President, she played a significant role in the establishing of a panel of eminent persons,
together with LAWASIA, the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute and
Transparency International-Malaysia in the year 2008.
This panel reviewed the judicial crisis of 1988 and issued a report which was the first of its kind.
In March 2009, Dato’ Ambiga was the first Malaysian to receive the US Secretary of State’s
International Women of Courage Award for champion human rights, the status of women and
religious tolerance in Malaysia.
Dato’ Ambiga chaired Bersih 2.0, the organization behind the July 2011 rally in Kuala Lumpur
for clean and fair elections.
She was conferred an honorary doctorate in law by alma mater University of Exeter.
In September 2011, Dato’ Ambiga was recognized by France for her contributions to the
human rights defence and the ambassador of France to Malaysia, Marc Barety granted the
Legion of Honour insignia to her.
Dr Azmi Sharom
Associate Professor of Law at University of Malaya
Dr Azmi’s teaching and research interests are primarily environmental law and civil liberties.
He holds a LL.B (Hons) from the University of Sheffield, UK, LL.M from the
University of Nottingham, UK and PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies,
University of London.
He has published in the Asian Yearbook of International Law, the Singapore Yearbook of
International law and the International Journal on Minority and Group Rights, amongst others.
He writes a fortnightly current affairs column in The Star entitled “Brave New World”.
Dr Kua Kia Soong
Director of Suaram
Dr Kua is an author, activist, educationist (principal & academic director of New Era
College, Kajang 2000-2008), opposition Member Parliament for Petaling Jaya (1990-1995)
and the director of Malaysia’s human rights group Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM).
He was a detainee under the ISA (1987-1989) and has published several books,
his best seller being 445 Days Under Operation Lalang.
Dr Kua holds a BA and MA in Economics and PHD in Sociology from the University of Manchester, UK.
