Dear Members,
We refer to Malaysian Bar Circular No. 247/2025 dated 8 July 2025, which informs members of the Malaysian Bar’s call for a peaceful walk scheduled to take place on Monday, 14 July 2025 at 2:00 p.m., from the Palace of Justice (POJ) to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in Putrajaya.
This Walk is convened in light of heightened concerns surrounding the state of judicial independence, judicial appointments, and the need for transparency in the Judicial Appointments Commission’s processes. As members will be aware, the Malaysian Bar had previously resolved at its 79th Annual General Meeting on 15 March 2025 to take proactive measures in defending the integrity of the judiciary.
The Malaysian Bar will be handing over a Memorandum at the PMO to:
1. Call for the immediate filling of judicial leadership positions with candidates of integrity, experience, and credibility;
2. Demand disclosure of Judicial Appointments Commission meeting minutes and an inquiry into alleged interference in judicial affairs;
3. Reiterate the call for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate allegations of interference as highlighted by the former Chief Justice, Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat; and
4. Urge the urgent filling of judicial vacancies, which currently stand at 31, to prevent justice from being delayed or denied.
Details of the Walk are as follows:
Date | 14 July 2025 (Monday) |
Time | 2:00 p.m. |
Gathering Point | Palace of Justice, Putrajaya (entrance facing Perbadanan Putrajaya) |
Destination | Prime Minister’s Office |
Dress Code | Chambers Attire |
The Committee is making arrangements for a bus to transport members to and from Putrajaya for the Walk. Should there be sufficient response (minimum of 20 participants) the bus will proceed as planned. The coach is expected to leave Johor Bahru on Monday, 14th July 2025 at 8 a.m. and to return on the same day (meeting point will be confirmed). For members outside of Johor Bahru arrangements will be made for pick up at the respective toll exits along the North-South Highway.
Members who wish to participate in the Walk are required to sign up via the following link – http://bit.ly/44sY7ly or contact the Secretariat at 07-220 9797 not later than Friday, 11th July 2025 before 12:00 noon for the necessary arrangements to be confirmed.
Let us walk together in unity and purpose to defend the independence of our Judiciary.
These are not matters that concern the courts alone. They affect all of us as lawyers, as officers of the court, and as members of a society that depends on an impartial and independent judiciary. The right to a fair hearing, access to justice without delay, and public confidence in the legal system are fundamental to the rule of law. We urge all members to participate and stand together in this effort. Your presence matters, not only for the profession but for the public we serve.
FADHIL IHSAN BIN MOHAMAD HASSAN
