DO YOU WANT TO DO LEGAL AID AND GET PAID AS WELL ?

I reproduce the contents of Bar Council circular no. 039/2011 dated 22 Feb 2011 for your kind attention :

We are pleased to announce that Yayasan Bantuan Guaman Kebangsaan (“YBGK”), which will be launched by the Prime Minister, YAB Dato’ Seri Mohd Najib b Tun Abdul Razak, on 25 Feb 2011 (Friday), has been set up to pay for the services of lawyers who represent those needing legal aid representation in criminal proceedings.

The establishment of YBGK provides, for the first time, a comprehensive and sustainable legal aid programme for those ensnared in the criminal justice system. YBGK will provide real relief to thousands of Malaysians (irrespective of their financial means) upon arrest, at remand hearings and when they are charged in court. However in sofar as hearings are concerned, the accused must still satisfy a means test before qualifying to receive legal assistance from YBGK.

The Bar Council Legal Aid Centre will work closely with YBGK to assist in its delivery of services. We invite all Members to register to offer their services with YBGK. Even Members who have not handled criminal cases are encouraged to sign up as training will be provided.
