Circular No. 50/18: Workshop on Handling Inquests (11 Aug 2018)

The Johore Bar Human Rights Sub Committee is organising a workshop on how to handle inquests in court for the benefit of members and pupils-in-chambers.

This workshop will provide an overview of the law on inquests, preparation for inquests, issues that arise when conducting inquests, and gathering of evidence.

We cordially invite all Members of the Bar, pupils in chambers and the public to this workshop, the details whereof are as follows:

About the Trainers

M Visvanathan was admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 1996.  He has worked notably in matters involving deaths in police custody, police shootings, and police ill-treatment.  Visvanathan has conducted various workshops on inquests, for the Bar Council and Bar Council Legal Aid Centres.

Yohendra Nadarajan is an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya, and has been a member of the Bar Council Human Rights Committee since 2009.  He has conducted a few public interest cases over the years, including holding a watching brief for the Malaysian Bar in an inquest case, and assisting a minor who was charged under the Emergency (Public Order and Prevention of Crime) Ordinance 1969, among others.  He has conducted numerous workshops and sessions on human rights for lawyers and students.  Previously, Yohendra was the Human Rights Education Coordinator for Amnesty International Malaysia from 2006 to 2008, and was a member of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (“SUHAKAM”)’s working group on human rights education in schools.  He was also elected as the Asia-Pacific representative to Amnesty International’s Human Rights Education Coordinating Committee.

Registration must be accompanied with payment to guarantee your place and is on a first-come first served basis limited to 50 persons who register, not later than Friday, 10th August 2018.

CPD points and Certificate of attendance will be given upon completion of the whole session to participants who have attended until the end of the event.
