Circular No. 49/15: Seminar on The Fundamentals of Cross-Examination in Civil and Commercial Trials (10 Dec 2015)

After a successful run in Johor Bahru, the Continuing Professional Development Sub-Committee of the Johore Bar is pleased to organize the seminar on the fundamentals of cross-examination in civil and commercial trials in Muar, Johor.

The seminar is designed to teach basic skills and to impart useful lessons and pointers for young advocates to utilise in their cross-examination of witnesses.

The seminar will deal with:

  • the objective and purpose of cross-examination;
  • the nature of cross-examination in civil and commercial matters;
  • common mistakes made during cross-examination; and
  • practical tips for young lawyers.

About the speaker

Brendan Navin Siva is a B Ec / LLB graduate of the University of Sydney and was called to the Malaysian Bar in 1999. Brendan is the Chairperson of the Subcommittee on Advocacy Training Course of the Bar Council Professional Standards and Development Committee. He has conducted training sessions in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Malacca, Johor Bahru, Kuantan, Muar, Alor Setar, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.

In 2013, Brendan was elected to the Executive Committee of the International Advocacy Training Council, as the Malaysian Bar’s representative. Brendan was the first Malaysian to be invited by the General Council of the Bar of South Africa to join their international faculty of advocacy trainers for the Advanced Advocacy Training Course at the Wallenberg Centre, Stellenbosch in January 2014. He was also the first Malaysian to be invited by the South Eastern Circuit Bar Mess Foundation to join their international faculty of advocacy trainers for the Advanced International Advocacy Course at Keble College, Oxford in August 2014.
