Improving the Standard of Advocacy and Producing Better Advocates
The Continuing Professional Development Sub-Committee of the Johore Bar in collaboration with the Bar Council Advocacy Training Committee will be conducting Civil Advocacy Course in Johor Bahru.
For the past eight years, the Bar Council Advocacy Training Committee has organised the course throughout Malaysia for Members and pupils in chambers with the primary objective of improving the standards of advocacy and producing better advocates. The ATC aims to teach advocacy skills to lawyers in their first to third years of practice, in order to effectively identify and rectify basic mistakes in advocacy, and to offer guidance to new practitioners on the correct way to adduce evidence, present their arguments as well as to conduct themselves in a courtroom.
The course utilises a specific method of advocacy teaching that is deployed in Commonwealth jurisdictions, which requires participants to perform as advocates in a simulated courtroom environment under the guidance of experienced and trained practitioners who will observe their performance and offer personalised guidance.
Junior Members and Members with little advocacy experience will find the course extremely useful and beneficial. Members are encouraged to register for and attend the course. Given the nature of the teaching method employed, the course is open to only 30 participants. Places will be given on a first-come, first-served basis but Members are encouraged to register their names nonetheless, as it is intended that the course will be organised regularly for the benefit of Members.
The feedback received from the participants at the end of every training session is that it was invaluable in many respects; juniors have come away from the course more confident and competent as advocates.
Although the course is aimed primarily at lawyers in their first three years of practice by identifying and correcting basic mistakes as well as offering guidance, the value of the instructions and guidance for lawyers beyond that range of practice cannot be gain said. The feedback received from such lawyers is that the course was an eye-opener in that what was perceived and accepted as the “right” way of conducting a trial was in fact erroneous. So, it is never too late in the day to gain knowledge and correct our mistakes.
The ATC carries 12 points for trainers, facilitators and participants under the Bar Council Continuing Professional Development Scheme (“CPD”).

Members of the Bar and pupils in chambers are urged to register for the course by completing and submit the enclosed registration as earliest possible to book your seat. Registration will be confirmed once proof of payment is provided by email or fax and full payment is received. The course material will be e-mailed to each participant, the inclusion of a valid e-mail address is imperative.
If a participant is unable to attend, a replacement is allowed provided that the Secretariat of the Johore Bar is notified in writing prior to the commencement of the event. Fee paid is non-refundable unless the event is cancelled.
CPD points and Certificate of attendance will be given upon completion of the whole session to participants who have attended until the end of the event. However, certificate of attendance shall not be awarded to late comers or those participants who attend this event after 15 minutes upon its commencement.
