Circular No. 42/13: Seminar on Family Law (20 Sept 2013)

The Continuing Professional Development Sub-Committee of the Johore Bar in collaboration with the Bar Council CPD is organising a one-day SEMINAR ON FAMILY LAW.


This seminar is ideal for Members who have more than five years’ experience in handling family law matters. The seminar will include discussion on the basic law and cases as well as the relevant procedures. It will be interactive and Members will be expected to participate in the question-and-answer session, and a practical drafting exercise. Participants are advised to bring along the following statutes: Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976 together with Divorce and Matrimonial Proceedings Rules 1980, and Law Reform Marriage and Divorce Rules 1982; Married Women and Children (Maintenance) Act 1950; Gurdianship of Infants Act 1961; and Courts of Judicature Act 1964.

Fees : RM 135.00 for Members of the Johore Bar;

RM 65.00 for Pupils-in-Chambers I Law Students; and

The Bio-data of the Speaker

Ms. Pushpa Ratnam is an advocate and solicitor. She was admitted to the High Court of Malaya in 1994. She received a scholarship from the University of Kingston to complete the final two years of her law degree there, and was also sponsored by the Magistracy of London to complete her Bar final. Pushpa Ratnam served the London Judiciary as a Legal Advisor and Magistrates until 1994. During her five years in service, she gained vast experience in the area of family law in the United Kingdom. This has been enhanced by her continued assistance in various local and international women’s groups and organisations. In the course of legal practice, she has also presented several papers at national forums, and spoken at Kuala Lumpur Bar and Bar Council forums on family law, domestic violence and gender issues.

Payment may be made by Cheque or Cash. Cheques should be made payable to JOHORE BAR HOUSE & LIBRARY FUND.

Points for the Continuing Professional Development (“CPD”) Scheme will not be awarded to any Members of the Bar who arrives more than 15 minutes late or is not present throughout the event, or leaves before its schedule ends.

Kindly take note that attendance at this Seminar will earn you 6 CPD Points.
